Brighton Water Issues
Copper And Lead At The Tap
Brighton’s service line inventory lists 4,564 lines with none made of lead and none of unknown material, so what reaches your glass depends mostly on the faucets, fittings, and solder inside your home. In the most recent sampling, lead was reported at 1 ppb. Copper was reported at 1.1 ppm, close to the 1.3 ppm action level, and individual results ranged from 0.2 to 1.5 ppm.
What Is The Water Quality Of The Brighton Area?
The city met all state and federal standards and lists no violations. All seven PFAS compounds Michigan regulates were below the 2 ppt reporting level, arsenic and nitrate were not detected, and naturally occurring radium measured 1.323 pCi/L against a 5 pCi/L limit. Read the full results in the City of Brighton’s annual Water Quality Report.

Water Filter FAQ
We Have Answers!
Does reverse osmosis reduce copper in Brighton water?
Yes. Certified reverse osmosis systems reduce copper and lead at the faucet you drink from. Copper usually comes from a home’s own pipes, especially when water sits in them overnight. With Brighton’s reported copper level at 1.1 ppm and individual results reaching 1.5 ppm, an RO system is a practical safeguard for drinking and cooking water.
Is there PFAS in Brighton water, and can RO reduce it?
The most recent report shows all seven regulated PFAS compounds below the 2 ppt reporting level. For reference, Michigan limits PFOA to 8 ppt, PFOS to 16 ppt, and PFHxS to 51 ppt, and the federal limit for PFOA and PFOS is 4 ppt. Private wells aren’t part of the city’s testing. Certified reverse osmosis is one of the most effective home options for reducing PFAS.
Will reverse osmosis lower the sodium in my water?
Yes. Brighton’s water contains about 44 ppm of sodium before any softening, and a softener adds a little more. Reverse osmosis removes most dissolved salts, including sodium, which helps if you soften your water or are watching sodium in your diet.
Does reverse osmosis remove fluoride and chlorine?
Yes. Brighton adds fluoride during treatment, and it measured 0.63 ppm, with results from 0.42 to 0.95 ppm. RO reduces it, so talk with your Culligan expert if you’d rather keep fluoride in your drinking water. The carbon stages also reduce chlorine, which the city holds at a 0.35 ppm running annual average. Total trihalomethanes measured 37.6 ppb and HAA5 measured 2 ppb.
Does reverse osmosis reduce radium?
Yes. Radium occurs naturally in some Michigan groundwater, and reverse osmosis is one of the treatments that reduces it. Brighton’s combined radium measured 1.323 pCi/L, well under the 5 pCi/L limit. If you’re on a private well nearby, a water test is the only way to know your level.
What is Chromium 6 and can Culligan equipment filter out Chromium 6?
Yes, chromium six (or hexavalent chromium) has recently been discovered in limited amounts in some water supplies. Chromium six is suspected of being a carcinogen, and should not be ingested at amounts above the federally mandated limits. We have never been alarmists, but if you are concerned about the quality of the water you drink, you might want to consider a reverse osmosis system. Reverse Osmosis is the only readily available system that removes up to 97% of Chromium-6. You can read more about it here.
What is Reverse Osmosis (R.O.)?
Reverse osmosis is a sophisticated multi-stage filtration system that is capable of removing up to 97% of all the dissolved minerals from your water. It is designed to make water that is at least as good as the water you buy in bottles. Many times, it’s even better. This reduces waste in landfills by using less bottled water, making reverse osmosis environmentally friendly.
Is Reverse Osmosis water as good as bottled water?
Yes – The Culligan RO system uses multiple processes including Reverse Osmosis to make great tasting, low sodium drinking water. Reverse Osmosis removes about 97% of the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) including salt and sodium from the water. Read the labels on bottled water and you will discover reverse osmosis is the same process used by most bottlers … so in effect … you really are getting … “bottled water without the bottle”.
I already have a filter in my refrigerator? Why do I need anything else?
Refrigerator filters are typically just carbon, and while carbon filtered water is better than no treatment at all, it is limited in what it can remove. Only reverse osmosis is capable of removing dissolved minerals and chemicals from your water.
Can I rent a reverse osmosis system in Brighton?
Yes. A reverse osmosis rental from Culligan includes installation and scheduled filter changes, so your drinking water system keeps performing without a large upfront cost.

Why Price Tags Are Deceptive
Unless you were an expert installer, you wouldn’t buy a water heater directly off Amazon. However, big box retailers, both in-store and online, take this transactional approach to homeowners for reverse osmosis water filters. They offer you low price tags for incentive. But what they don’t tell you about are the installation hassle, the third-party customer service on both ends, and how you’re left to your own devices to maintain your system – don’t forget, your home is unique.
